New report shows even Tasmania is doing better than Queensland

23rd January 2017
  • CommSec State of the States report ranks Queensland down in fifth on economic performance
  • New South Wales, Victoria and even Tasmania powering ahead while Queensland struggles
  • Queensland ranked second last on wages growth and construction work

The highly-respected CommSec State of the States report released today shows even Tasmania is outperforming Queensland under Annastacia Palaszczuk’s watch.

Shadow Treasurer Scott Emerson said the report showed Queensland ranked near the bottom of the pack on most economic indicators.

“We’re sixth out of eight on economic growth, business investment, unemployment and housing finance, while we’re seventh out of eight on construction work done,” Mr Emerson said.

“Worse still, we’re also in second last on wages growth.

“Queenslanders are earning less, and it’s a direct result of this inexperienced and incompetent Annastacia Palaszczuk-led government.”

Mr Emerson said this was just the latest report showing that Queensland was falling behind most other states and business confidence was on the decline.

“Queensland led the nation in job losses over the last year – a point illustrated yet again in today’s CommSec report,” he said.

“Engineering construction work has almost halved under Labor while building approvals and building work are both on the slide.

“This sad, sorry start to 2017 has highlighted Labor simply isn’t up to the job of governing Queensland.”

Key stats:

  • Equipment investment is down 7.3 per cent in the last year
  • Employment is falling at a worse rate than any other state
  • Construction work has gone backwards 2.4 per cent in a year
  • Economic growth is lagging behind other major states such as New South Wales and Victoria and is well below the national average
