The State Electorate of Nanango has some 48 towns and communities and covers some 18,122 square kilometres.
From Brisbane, it is the inland gateway to the rest of Queensland.
The people who reside in the Nanango electorate are in Deb’s unbiased opinion the luckiest in the State. Our region is blessed with some of the finest prime agricultural lands, tourism opportunities, natural resources and industry – but most importantly resilient and easy-going people.
The Electorate of Nanango covers parts of four regional council areas including:
- Somerset
From Kilcoy to the small cropping districts on the boarder of the Lockyer Valley including the townships of Coominya, Somerset, Esk & Toogoolawah
- South Burnett
Where the finest peanuts in Australia are grown in the unique rich red soils, the area is known as the peanut and navy bean capital of Australia but also grows a variety of cereal and grain crops, duboisia, pumpkins, melons and stone fruits; the South Burnett is also Queensland’s largest wine region.
- Cherbourg
Cherbourg is an Aboriginal community where cultural tourism and Indigenous arts are growing industries, highlighting the region’s rich and vibrant heritage.
- Toowoomba
Including the regions of Yarraman, Cooyar
- Gympie
From Woolooga to Goomeri, including Kilkivan, Tansey and Booubyjan districts.
Whilst all these areas produce fine crops the electorate also produces some of the State’s best beef and pork.
Agriculture is the lifeblood of the Nanango Electorate, forming the backbone of our local economy.
Kingaroy is home to major peanut processing facilities, while Swickers stands proudly as Australia’s largest pork processor. The Kilcoy Pastoral Company also operates a prominent beef abattoir in the region, further highlighting our strength in primary production and food processing.
The Electorate of Nanango also offers a low-cost, family-friendly holiday destination with a wealth of tourism experiences — from fishing, camping, and four-wheel driving at Jimna, to water sports, country race days, festivals, wineries, bushwalking, and farm stays. All of this is just a short drive from Brisbane.
Importantly, the Electorate is home to two of South-East Queensland’s most significant water sources — Somerset and Wivenhoe Dams — which are critical to the region’s water security and recreation.
