Volunteers will be respected under the LNP

7th May 2024

Statement by Shadow Minister for Volunteers, Ann Leahy

Shadow Minister for Volunteers Ann Leahy has today announced a future Crisafulli LNP Government will order a Parliamentary Inquiry into Breaking Down Barriers to Volunteering.

It follows today’s release of the State of Volunteering in Queensland 2024 Report which found participation numbers have fallen under the Palaszczuk-Miles Government, compared to the previous report released in 2021.

Shadow Minister for Volunteers Ann Leahy said there are too many barriers for Queenslanders who want to volunteer.

“Volunteers will be a priority if the LNP Opposition wins the October election,” Ms Leahy said.

“Since becoming the Shadow Minister for Volunteers, I have listened to Queenslanders and volunteer organisations.

“This latest report highlights what I’ve heard.

“Whether it’s time, health, financial constraints and burnout, there is so much untapped potential in this sector.

“The LNP wants to be part of the solution.

“Today I can announce that an LNP government would order a Parliamentary Inquiry into Breaking Down Barriers to Volunteering.

The inquiry will focus on the following five areas:

  • Restrictions on volunteering caused by legislation and regulation
  • Current government support for the sector and opportunities for improvement
  • Barriers to volunteering for non-volunteers
  • Current restrictions adversely limiting active volunteers
  • Opportunities for diversification in the volunteer workforce

“The Committee will be expected to bring recommendations at the legislative, regulatory and financial level.

“I thank Volunteering Queensland for their dedication and their hard work on the 2024 report and advocacy plan.

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of so many Queensland communities and they’ve been forgotten in the chaos and crisis that has engulfed the Palaszczuk-Miles Government.

“My message to volunteers is simple. We thank you, respect you and value the incredible work you do.”
