LNP welcomes extra federal drought support

7th August 2018

Queensland communities affected by drought will receive much-needed support in the form of extra federal household assistance as the climatic situation continues to become increasingly dire.

The Federal Coalition Government’s announcement of an additional $190 million in extra support and funding for drought-affected farmers across the country has been welcomed by Liberal National Party State Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington.

"These extra support measures announced by Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull on the weekend and confirmed by Cabinet today show that the federal Coalition is not only listening, but is willing to take action when it comes to supporting our struggling farmers and regional communities," Ms Frecklington said.

"Queensland primary producers are doing it tough and it's important they know they aren't facing this drought alone."

Liberal National Party Shadow Agriculture Minister Tony Perrett thanked the Federal Coalition for its support for Queensland farmers.

"It is important that as a government we do everything we can to support our farming families during this unforgiving drought," Mr Perrett said.

"This also means government getting out of the way and allowing landholders to productively manage their properties in times of drought and hardship.

"Unfortunately, the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s unfair vegetation management laws are directly affecting Queensland farmers’ ability to feed their starving livestock.

"Labor’s new restrictions on using mulga trees to feed livestock have added extra red tape and untold stress to farmers struggling to keep what’s left of their sheep and cattle alive."

Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington said the Liberal National Party was committed to building the dams and water infrastructure that would help drought proof more regions in the state.

"While Labor refuse to build the dams that will help drought proof our regions and create jobs, the LNP will raise the Burdekin Falls Dam wall, get the Urannah and Nullinga Dam projects shovel ready and finally deliver Rockwood Weir for Central Queensland.

"Only the Liberal National Party is committed to doing what it takes to support our drought affected communities in the longer term."
