LNP Leader Deb Frecklington has called on Telstra to preserve jobs in regional Queensland after the company proposed reductions to its workforce nationally.
Up to 23 jobs at Telstra’s Townsville Customer Service Centre are expected to be impacted.
“Townsville needs all the jobs it can get right now,” Ms Frecklington said.
“This is heartbreaking news for workers at Telstra’s hub in Townsville and their families.
“With the unemployment rate already at 7.1 per cent, I don’t want any more mums and dads added to the jobless queue in Townsville.
“I am urging Telstra to preserve regional jobs, particularly in Townsville.”
LNP Shadow Minister for North Queensland Dale Last said Townsville couldn't afford more jobs to be lost.
"The region has been doing it especially tough lately and this would be another kick in the guts," Mr Last said.
"It's also a significant blow to future employment opportunities for our youth, which is a big problem in the North.
"The LNP is standing shoulder to shoulder with workers in Townsville and Annastacia Palaszczuk should come out and do the same.
"Telstra needs to stop putting profits before service and understand just how important these jobs are in regional areas."
