Rural fire brigades back LNP’s Bushfire Mitigation Plan

29th September 2020

The LNP has welcomed the endorsement of its bushfire mitigation plan by the experts in the field – the Rural Fire Brigade Association of Queensland (RFBAQ).

The RFBAQ’s ringing endorsement stated it was “supportive of the LNP 10 Point Plan and see it as a platform for brigades and landholders to better manage their bushfire risk”’*.

The LNP also received full marks from the RFBAQ on the association’s key five key strategies it had identified to improve the treatment and support for its 35,000 volunteers**.

LNP Shadow Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Lachlan Millar said the LNP was the only party that had a serious plan to get Queensland’s bushfire mitigation back under control.

“Queenslanders can have confidence in our plan for bushfire mitigation that is backed by the experts responsible for fighting fires,” Mr Millar said.

“This endorsement from the RFBAQ comes after the Federal Government’s Royal Commission in bushfires interim report supported key elements of the LNP’s comprehensive plan to get Queensland bushfire ready.”

“The LNP’s 10-point bushfire mitigation plan will restore local control to rural fire brigades as well as establish a dedicated Rural Fire Board.

“The LNP is the only party that has a plan that will put bushfire prevention at the forefront of its priorities to ensure Queenslanders are kept safe.

“In stark contrast, the Palaszczuk Labor Government is using smoke and mirrors to hide its cuts to Queensland’s rural fire brigades.

“A Deb Frecklington LNP Government will treat rural firies with the respect they deserve and provide them with the equipment they need.”

Driver Reviver upgrades for a safer Bruce

28th September 2020

As more Queenslanders hit the road for holidays, LNP Leader Deb Frecklington has announced another major road infrastructure and safety plan.

Ms Frecklington said in addition to the visionary long-term duplication upgrade of the Bruce Highway, the LNP will also provide a $50 million boost to build new and upgrade driver reviver rest stops to support driver safety and prevent fatigue.

“Queensland is losing the war on reducing the road toll,” Ms Frecklington said.

“We can’t just talk about road safety, we have to build the infrastructure for motorists to use.

“Building a better Bruce Highway is not only a visionary project to future proof regional economies, but it will encourage more drive tourism which will be even more vital while international borders are closed.

“It could be the difference between businesses keeping their doors open.”

The LNP’s investment comes on the back of a shocking increasing in the road toll this year, with a spike of almost 20% compared to last year and well above the five-year average.

126 fatalities have been recorded on the Bruce Highway between 2014-2018.

Fatigue is one of the leading causes of road crashes.

The LNP’s plan will not only save lives and improve safety, but also support over 150 construction jobs across regional Queensland.

Ms Frecklington said the program would be established in partnership with local Councils along the Bruce Highway to determine the best locations.

“As an initial priority, the LNP will conduct a state-wide audit of existing driver reviver rest stops to determine the best location for additional sites, while increasing maintenance at existing stops,” Ms Frecklington said.

“This latest LNP road safety boost will not only support local motorists and road users but also encourage the drive tourism market as well.”

LNP Shadow Transport Minister Steve Minnikin said the quality of our road infrastructure, including roadside rest areas is important to provide a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

“There are only two current stops between Mackay and Rockhampton, and 12 between Cairns and Gympie,” Mr Minnikin said.

“Increased signage would also be part of the LNP’s plan.”

Queensland Trucking Association CEO Gary Mahon supports the LNP’s plan and said the QTA is always pleased to work on increasing the number of rest areas and providing good basic standards for truck drivers as they go about the vital service they undertake for all our Queensland communities.

“We all want to get home safe from work and it is critical that the long-distance truck drivers have a decent opportunity to rest and manage their fatigue,” Mr Mahon said.

Caravanning Queensland Trade CEO Jason Plant said he supports any initiative designed to improve road safety, for all road users.

“Rest stops provide road users with the ability to manage their fatigue when travelling long distances throughout Queensland,” Mr Plant said.

“We encourage all road users to pre-plan their rest stops and fatigue management.”

Deb’s education plan for a better future

28th September 2020

An LNP Government will hire an additional 3350 teachers and 760 teacher aides across Queensland over the next four years in a major education boost for Queensland schools.

The $1.05 billion commitment is part of the LNP’s plan to build a stronger economy and secure our children’s future.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said investing in schools and providing a world-class education to Queensland kids was a key part of the LNP’s economic plan to get Queensland working again.

“The LNP will invest in education and get back to basics in schools as part of our economic recovery plan,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Our plan to build a stronger economy means we can invest more in our schools and employ more teachers and teacher aides.

“Queensland kids need a secure economic future and that won’t happen without a comprehensive plan to boost education.

“Investing in education will support local families and lay the foundation for our kids to get ahead in life.

“The LNP’s plan will mean a better education for our kids which will secure our children’s future.”

LNP Shadow Minister for Education Jarrod Bleijie said the major education announcement is on the back of the LNP’s plan to get back to basics by decluttering the curriculum, air conditioning every state school classroom, introducing a phonics screen check to boost reading and continuing the Independent Public Schools program.

“Recent reports of looming teacher shortages in areas like Mackay and Cairns are a sign of Labor’s education failures,” Mr Bleijie said.

“We want to encourage more school leavers to become teachers and take on more mature-age recruits as well.

“The lure of secure employment should be attractive particularly in a recession.

“Only the LNP has a comprehensive plan to provide a world-class education across Queensland.”

Safe drivers going for gold under new LNP plan

28th September 2020

Queensland drivers with an unblemished record behind the wheel will be rewarded for their safe driving, under new incentive scheme announced by LNP Leader Deb Frecklington today.

Road fatalities are almost 20% higher than this time last year, despite a massive reduction in traffic movement in the first half of this year.

Ms Frecklington said it is time for a new approach.

“If I’m elected Premier next month, I will reward safe driving in Queensland, with the release of a new 10-year gold driving licence,” Ms Frecklington said.

“There are many sanctions applied to drivers who infringe traffic laws, other than insurance, there are no incentives to recognise and reward safe driving behaviour.

“For those drivers who have not accumulated any demerit points in the 10-year period leading up to their licence renewal, they will be rewarded with a 10-year licence for the cost of the standard 5-year one.

“Rewarding safe driving will save lives, it is as simple as that.

“Slowing down on the road could save your life and now it can save money as well.

“We want to see less carnage on our roads and if this initiative only saves one life, than it’s worth it.”

LNP Shadow Transport Minister Steve Minnikin said the LNP won’t be scrapping existing penalties but we want to see more incentives for a good driving record.

“With a troubling increase in the road toll, it’s time for new measures to encourage safe driving,” Mr Minnikin said.

“There are approximately 2.8 million drivers between the age of 27 and 75 who potentially would be eligible to secure a 10-year gold licence.”

Lift-off for space launch site and jobs under LNP

25th September 2020

An LNP Government will unleash the space industry in Queensland and create hundreds of jobs by building a rocket launch site near Abbot Point, North Queensland.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said the $15 million investment to construct a government-owned orbital rocket launch site would provide 300 jobs – 100 jobs in construction and 200 secure jobs when anchor tenant Gilmour Space Technologies operates monthly launches.

Each additional tenant at the site is estimated to provide a further 100 jobs. The rocket launch site will be used by companies to send satellites and other cargo into orbit.

“Unleashing the space industry in Queensland is part of the LNP’s economic plan to create jobs and build new assets,” Ms Frecklington said.

“An LNP Government will seize this ambitious opportunity to make Queensland a smart state once again through space.

“High-tech and highly paid secure jobs are what this project is all about.

“This is part of the LNP’s plan to grow Queensland’s assets and rebuild a stronger economy to create secure jobs.

“Queensland has a comparative advantage over other states when it comes to space and an LNP Government will play a leadership role by investing in infrastructure.

“The rocket launch site will be an asset 100 per cent owned by the Queensland Government and open up new opportunities for our state.

“Our investment will create new markets for Queensland in industries like advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defence, mining, technology and tourism.

“Globally, space is a multi-trillion-dollar industry and the LNP’s investment will help make Queensland a major player.

“Queensland’s space economy has the potential to pour up to $6 billion into the state economy and support up to 6000 high-skilled jobs by 2036.

“Becoming a space state will help make Queensland the economic powerhouse of Australia once again.”

LNP MP for Burdekin Dale Last said building the rocket launch site was part of the LNP’s plan to supercharge the regions.

“The LNP’s $15 million investment will make the make North Queensland the space capital of Australia and drive new economic opportunities,” Mr Last said.

“The LNP is the only party with money on the table to build the space rocket launch site.

“If a launch facility isn’t built here, space business will be lost to other states or overseas.

“The people of North Queensland want investments that stimulate the economy and create jobs and that’s what an LNP Government will deliver.”

LNP Candidate for Whitsunday Amanda Camm said the project would create a new tourism and marketing opportunity in the region.

“Tourism businesses in the region are hurting like never before in this downturn,” Ms Camm said.

“Bold and ambitious projects like rocket launch site will create new tourism opportunities to help them rebound.

“Being able to witness live rocket launches here will be a major tourist drawcard.

“To see and feel the lift-off of rockets leaving Abbott Point for atmosphere is bucket-list experience.

“The LNP’s investment will lure more tourists and more businesses to North Queensland in the future.”

Background

Abbot Point has been assessed by the government as the ideal site for a launch pad on the basis that:

  • Rockets are generally required to launch along a coastline to avoid flying over populations.
  • Launching eastward is preferable as it allows rockets to accelerate with the Earth’s rotation to leave the atmosphere.
  • Proximity to the equator means that launch vehicles can gain up to an additional 460 metres per second of speed from the Earth’s spin, which further reduces costs

Abbot Point allows companies to launch satellites safely to more locations in space than any other place in Australia:

  • Proximity to the equator allowing Gilmour to launch to more orbital inclinations in space (rivalling the Kennedy Space Centre in terms of location).
  • Many of Gilmour’s customers want orbital locations that are only possible from Abbot Point and northwards. South Australia has a launch facility but Queensland has a comparative advantage in terms of location.
  • Range safety - where the rocket flies after launch and what it could potentially impact. Abbot Point has very little air and sea traffic conflict.
  • Access to infrastructure (roads, power, internet, 3G)

Queensland’s space industry already supports 2000 jobs and generates $760 million in annual revenue through industry services like satellite communications.

LNP backs Sunshine Coast eating disorder centre

24th September 2020

The LNP will provide the funding to develop a ‘step-out’ facility for people who are recovering from eating disorders if it forms the next state government.

LNP Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and LNP Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander announced $800,000 of support for the new endED facility today.

The Sunshine Coast-based charity is currently building Australia’s first dedicated residential treatment centre for people with eating disorders in the Mooloolah Valley, in partnership with Butterfly House.

The LNP’s commitment will enable the charity to purchase a Sunshine Coast property which will be equipped to help people recovering from eating disorders transition from the residential centre back into the community.

“There’s no question that more can be done to support people with eating disorders,” Mr Powell said.

“That’s why the work of endED is so important.

“Thanks to this amazing organisation, people with eating disorders are finally getting the support they need.

“I have been impressed and moved by this charity’s work and I’m very proud that the LNP is joining them in the fight against eating disorders.

“Eating disorders damage families and destroy lives. We need to do more to fight this problem – and the LNP will do more.”

Mr Mander said the funding would be guaranteed if the LNP wins the October 31 election.

“Covid-19 is dominating the headlines right now, but we cannot afford to ignore the other health threats that Queenslanders face – especially our young people,” Mr Mander said.

“The LNP understands the devastating impact that eating disorders can have and we will do all we can to help victims recover and stay strong.”

Premier is to blame for Barbagallo scandal

24th September 2020

The arrogance and deceit at the heart of the Palaszczuk Labor Government have been exposed in today’s CCC report into the undeclared business interests of the Premier’s former chief-of-staff, David Barbagallo.

The report found that Barbagallo’s conduct broke the Ministerial Staff Act, the Declarations of Interests Directive, the Ministerial Staff Code of Conduct and the Queensland Ministerial Handbook.

The CCC concluded that the Premier’s right-hand man could have faced disciplinary proceedings if he had not resigned.

The report also revealed that the Premier misled MPs when she advised them that Barbagallo had sought advice from the Integrity Commissioner before a company he part-owned applied for a $267,500 grant from the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

LNP Deb Frecklington said the report was further proof of Labor’s shocking lack of integrity.

“Deputy Premier Jackie Trad was caught out over a secret property purchase and now Annastacia Palaszczuk’s hand-picked chief-of-staff has been caught out over secret business deals,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk hand-picked David Barbagallo. This integrity scandal is her responsibility.

“The Premier should have thrown the book at Barbagallo, but instead she allowed him to get off scot-free by resigning two months after the scandal broke.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk also lied to MPs when she said Barbagallo had fully declared his business dealings and had sought Integrity Commissioner advice – neither of which is true.

“She must apologise to Parliament for her comments – and for bringing a proven liar into the heart of her government.

“Barbagallo’s interviews with the CCC showed astonishing arrogance and that those at the top of the Palaszczuk Labor Government believe they are above scrutiny.

“The grubby, arrogant culture of the Palaszczuk Labor Government is down to Annastacia Palaszczuk.

“The only way to end Labor’s integrity crisis is to get rid of this government.”

LNP to deliver manufacturing jobs boost

23rd September 2020

An LNP Government will create 140 manufacturing jobs and 300 construction jobs by backing a new factory in an area hit hard by unemployment.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said her party would invest $15m in the new factory in the Moreton Bay region if elected to government on October 31.

Packaging company Visy is assessing alternative sites in New South Wales and Victoria for its new plant – but says it will invest in Queensland if the LNP wins power.

Around 8600 people are unemployed in the north Moreton Bay region and around 1,100 manufacturing jobs have been lost locally in the last year.

“Only the LNP has a plan to stimulate the economy, create a decade of secure jobs and drag Queensland out of recession,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Queensland’s manufacturing industry has lost thousands of jobs under Annastacia Palaszczuk and the job losses will continue if Labor wins the next election.

“The LNP believes in investing for growth and unleashing Queensland industry.

“While Labor lavishes $15m on the AFL to host a single footy game, the LNP will invest the same sum to create lasting jobs for Queensland manufacturing workers.

“The contrast between the LNP and Labor couldn’t be clearer.

“Only the LNP has a plan that will deliver a stronger economy and secure jobs.”

Visy already employs 950 Queenslanders at factories across the state and will invest $135m in the new corrugated box factory.

The company said construction of the new factory could begin in mid-2021 with the support of an incoming LNP Government.

LNP Shadow Minister for Manufacturing Andrew Powell said Queensland manufacturing was in sharp decline under Labor, with 6,500 jobs in the sector lost in the last 12 months.

“Like the rest of the economy, manufacturing has been held back by Labor’s nine new taxes and economic incompetence,” Mr Powell said.

“The Palaszczuk Labor Government would rather spend taxpayers’ dollars on supporting the AFL and Hollywood than invest in well-paid, secure blue-collar jobs.

“The LNP will create jobs by building the New Bradfield Scheme and new road infrastructure, delivering cheaper electricity, cutting red-tape and guaranteeing no new taxes.

“The LNP will also back manufacturing with a $20m Built-in-Queensland initiative and a new Queensland Skills Council to improve training.

“Only the LNP has a plan to stimulate the economy, create a decade of secure jobs and drag Queensland out of recession.”

Report proof Labor is a digital disaster zone

23rd September 2020

A damning Auditor-General report released today serves as another reminder of Labor’s endless digital disasters that continue to rip-off Queensland taxpayers.

LNP Shadow Minister for Health Ros Bates said it was clear Labor hadn’t learnt a thing a decade after their failed $1.25 billion health payroll debacle.

“This is yet another shocking example of Labor’s wasteful spending,” Ms Bates said.

“The damning findings in the report are in addition to the $527 million in IT project blowouts under Labor.

“This is money that could have been spent on providing better health services.

“Wasting taxpayers’ money renaming hospitals and ongoing IT failures shows Labor’s priorities are all wrong.

“It’s clear health IT projects and Labor just don’t mix, and Queensland taxpayers continue to get ripped off.

“The LNP will treat taxpayer’s money with respect and stop Labor’s wasteful spending.

“The LNP will build a firewall that ensures Labor’s digital disasters are never repeated.

“We will insist that the Chief Information Officer works with government departments to produce mandatory project criteria.

“Departments will be compelled to provide more information about their decisions and conduct regular health checks as projects are rolled out.

“The Chief Information Officer will investigate project failures and ensure that lessons are learned.

“We will keep technology budgets on track and in the black.

“Every dollar Labor wastes is a dollar that can’t be spent providing better health services or supporting jobs.”

What the report found:

  • $33.5 million cost blow-out after the go-live date in August last year.
  • $540 million of invoices to small business suppliers were paid late
  • 14 of 16 Hospital and Health Services reported that the system didn’t operate as they expected at go-live
  • Millions of dollars of small business invoices were over 90 days late as at June this year.
  • The new IT system does not automatically track PPE demand outside distribution centres
  • Poor governance and accountability frameworks

Premier must match comprehensive LNP crime plan

23rd September 2020

The LNP has called on Annastacia Palaszczuk to match their plan to tackle crime in Townsville and keep the community safe.

LNP Deputy Leader Tim Mander said an LNP Government would provide an additional 60 permanent police officers in Townsville, fund a dedicated police helicopter and implement tougher laws to combat youth crime.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk must match the LNP’s comprehensive plan because their attempts to deal with the crimewave have been too little, too late,” Mr Mander said.

“Labor’s MPs in Townsville zero credibility when it comes to crime.

“They have sat on their hands for five years and surrendered Townsville’s streets to criminals.

“Labor are soft on crime - always have been, always will be.

“There’s only one way to bring a stop to the crimewave and that’s by changing the government on October 31.

“The LNP has a comprehensive plan to cut crime and protect the community.

“Only the LNP has a plan to build a stronger economy and create secure jobs in Townsville.

“A stronger economy means safer communities.”

Since Labor was elected in 2015, robbery has increased 163% in Townsville, armed robbery has increased 175%, unlawful use of motor vehicle has increased 97%, unlawful entry has increased 85% and assault has increased 40%.

“The people of Townsville have a right to feel safe in their homes and on the streets,” Mr Mander said.

“That’s not happening when young thugs are thumbing their nose at Labor’s soft laws, committing violent crime, car theft and drug use.

“The LNP’s commitment to 60 additional permanent police officers and a dedicated police helicopter will strengthen the front line against crime in Townsville.

“The LNP will give our hardworking police the laws and resources they need to do their job, put criminals behind bars and protect the public.

“There will be no more slaps on the wrist under the LNP. We will bring back true consequences for crime.”

LNP’s plan to crack down on youth crime

  • Tougher laws – Scrap Labor’s soft ‘catch and release’ laws; bring back breach of bail as an offence; recognise prior youth offending in the courts and remove detention as a last resort.
  • 24/7 monitoring of youth offenders on bail or other court orders – Extend youth justice department monitoring of youth offenders on bail around the clock. This will free up police resources and ensure the Department of Youth Justice is more accountable.
  • Mandatory detention for third conviction – The Youth Justice Act will be amended to force the courts to sentence a youth to detention if convicted of a third offence. No more slaps on the wrist.
  • Establish Community Payback Farm Program – The LNP will introduce a trial of five Community Payback Farms. This approach will focus on learning new skills, improving self-discipline, teaching offenders to take ownership of their actions, with a focus on culturally appropriate programs and elder mentoring. This will be a major rehabilitation program for repeat offenders to break the cycle of offending and slam closed the revolving door of youth crime.
  • Scrapping youth bail houses – Bail houses have been an expensive failure and have failed to reduce re-offending rates. Of the 95 young people residing in bail houses since 31 March 2019, 80 have committed further offences. This has been a failed $70 million experiment from Labor which has had an 84% re-offending rate.
  • More Early Intervention through Justice Reinvestment – Justice reinvestment diverts a portion of the funds for youth detention to communities with a high concentration of offenders. It promotes physical, social and emotional health in children to reduce youth crime. The LNP will establish a dedicated $7 million justice reinvestment two-year trial in 2021/22 and 2022/23 with Cairns and Townsville being ideal locations.

LNP plan to protect resource jobs from extremists

22nd September 2020

The LNP is listening to Queenslanders who want access to safe, secure and reliable jobs during these trying economic times.

A future Deb Frecklington LNP Government has tough anti-trespass laws that will protect workers and resource jobs from extremists who want to sabotage lawful resource businesses operating and employing locals.

LNP Shadow Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dale Last said that the LNP introduced the Criminal Code (Trespass Offences) Amendment Bill in 2019, in response to a surge in law-breaking actions by protesters threatening Queensland jobs.*

“The LNP’s tough new laws are all about protecting resource jobs,” Mr Last said.

“Under these laws it doesn’t matter if you are an individual, a group, or an organisation, you will face severe punishments for industrial sabotage.

“Hefty fines and lengthy jail time are the only way to stamp out this disruptive, pre-meditated and sophisticated criminal behaviour.

“These laws were endorsed by the state’s peak industry body - the Queensland Resources Council - who understand the need to protect businesses and resource jobs**.

“Parliament never got to debate the LNP’s tough new laws because the Palaszczuk Labor Government is anti-regions and anti-resources.

“Providing secure resource jobs and encouraging more investment is crucial to Queensland’s economic recovery and only the LNP has a plan to deliver.

“Local resource jobs cannot be put at risk under a weak Palaszczuk Labor Government that is beholden to extremists who seek to destroy our resources sector.

“The LNP is the only party determined to protect jobs in the resources and farming industries by delivering tough new laws and stronger penalties.

“Only a Deb Frecklington LNP Government has a plan to supercharge our regions to get Queensland working again and deliver a decade of secure jobs”.

*LNP Trespass:

  • • Aggravated trespass: maximum of 3 years imprisonment or a maximum fine of 100 penalty units ($13,055)
  • • Serious Criminal Trespass: maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment or a maximum fine of 3000 penalty units ($391,650)
  • • Organised Trespass: maximum fine of 10 years imprisonment or 3000 penalty units ($391,650)

LNP to launch 1000 Books Before School initiative

22nd September 2020

Children in Maryborough will be prepared for a lifetime of learning through an LNP initiative aimed at encouraging a love of reading and boosting language skills.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington joined the LNP’s Candidate for Maryborough Denis Chapman today to announce the 1000 Books Before School initiative.

The LNP will invest $100,000 in libraries and daycares across the Fraser Coast region to support parents, grandparents and carers to read 1000 books with their children before they begin school.

“Reading is one of the foundation skills kids need to ensure they can succeed at school,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Reading 1000 books with children before they enter the classroom will help prepare them for the lifetime of learning that lies ahead.

“Research shows the brain develops faster in the first five years than at any other stage.

“The LNP’s 1000 Books Before School program will encourage parents and carers to read together with their children and develop foundation skills in those early childhood years.

“The LNP’s initiative is aimed at giving thousands of kids in Maryborough the best start to schooling life.”

The 1000 Books Before School program will complement the LNP’s trial of phonics screening in Year 1 across 100 schools to boost literacy and ensure students don’t fall behind. Phonics screening checks work by assessing a child’s ability to identify and apply different sounds in basic words and can pick up if children have a reading difficulty.

“I want local kids to get the best chance in life and that’s starts with reading from a young age,” Mr Chapman said.

“Worryingly, NAPLAN results in Maryborough have gone backwards in all but one local state school in the last five years.

“We need to try new approaches because business as usual isn’t working.

“The 1000 Books Before School initiative will help build vocabulary and language skills in early childhood that are essential for learning to read.

“The LNP will invest $100,000 in the program here in Maryborough on resources for local libraries to be part of the program.

“Our campaign will instill a positive attitude toward reading and encourage cognitive development – not just reading but other forms of communication as well.

“The initiative will also bring families together to read and create fun memories.”

Reading for five to ten minutes every day helps kids develop communication skills and understand basic concepts like the correlation between sounds and letters. Learning to identify and read sight words is crucial for young children to become fluent readers.

Labor must implement shark program review findings

18th September 2020

The Palaszczuk Labor Government has failed to implement the recommendations of a review into the Queensland Shark Control Program released 12 months ago.

Following reports of another shark encounter yesterday, LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said Queenslanders deserved action.

“Labor are putting swimmers and tourism jobs at risk by failing to implement the recommendations of the review into Queensland’s shark control program,” Ms Frecklington said.

“These recommendations were made a year ago and should have already been implemented by Labor to ensure Queenslanders are as safe as possible in the water.

“Drones, aerial surveillance and SMART drumlines were recommended by the review, but Labor has failed to act.

“The report was handed to the government 364 days ago.

“Queensland’s shark control program should be constantly monitored to ensure it is properly resourced and effectively protects swimmers.

“The priority always needs to be swimmer safety and protecting local tourism jobs, promoting Queensland as a safe place.

“The LNP supports more drumlines, including SMART drumlines and aerial surveillance using drones to improve safety as part of a modern shark control program.”

LNP funding lifeline for Queensland’s surf life savers

18th September 2020

The LNP has pledged $3 million for Surf Life Saving Queensland to ensure the volunteers in red and yellow can keep beachgoers safe this summer.

The commitment comes after the Palaszczuk Labor Government failed to negotiate a funding agreement with Surf Life Saving for the full financial year.

This will take the total funding for Surf Life Saving Queensland this year to $6.2 million, plus $4.5 million worth of direct investment in local surf clubs and equipment.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said the much-needed funding injection would secure the organisation’s finances so its volunteers could continue to patrol our beaches throughout the summer months.

“Labor is risking the lives of thousands of Queenslanders by failing to give Surf Life Saving Queensland the certainty it needs,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Labor have been reckless and sneaky by only committing to funding the SLSQ to the 31st of December which is half way through this season.

“The volunteer organisation relies heavily on fundraising activities, which have been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak.

“This Queensland icon should have been able to rely on their government for support, but they’ve been hung out to dry by Labor.

“It would be a disaster if Labor cuts off funding for Surf Life Saving in the middle of summer when millions of Queenslanders head to the beach.

“We believe in supporting local surf lifesaving clubs because they protect the public and bring our communities together.

“An LNP Government will give Surf Life Saving Queensland the funds they need to continue their work through the peak summer period.

“We will also deliver a budget in the first 100 days of forming government and ensure Surf Lifesaving Queensland has a sustainable, multi-year funding agreement.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland’s current funding agreement expires on 31 December 2020.

LNP Shadow Minister for Volunteers Lachlan Millar said because Labor didn’t have a budget, organisations like Surf Life Saving Queensland had no certainty.

“Labor has no plan and no budget, and that means volunteer community organisations like Surf Life Saving Queensland have zero certainty about their future,” Mr Millar said.

“The funding uncertainty makes it really hard for volunteers to keep supporting their communities.

“The way Labor is treating our volunteers in red and yellow is shameful.

“This is another example of Labor’s wrong priorities.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk spent more than half a million dollars’ worth taxpayers’ money on coronavirus polling but can’t give Surf Life Saving Queensland funding certainty.

“Surf lifesaving clubs are the heart and soul of communities up and down Queensland’s coast.

“Unlike Labor, the LNP respects Surf Life Saving Queensland and will support their mission to patrol our beaches and keep people safe in the water.

“The LNP will step up and provide the funds our amazing surf lifesaving volunteers need to keep doing their job.”

COVID-safe plan for funerals an LNP priority

15th September 2020

Developing a COVID-safe plan to enable people to visit dying loved ones and attend funerals will be a priority under a Deb Frecklington LNP Government.

Ms Frecklington said there must a consistent, compassionate and common-sense approach to funerals and terminal illness.

“It’s important to allow families the opportunity to say goodbye, to grieve and to find some closure,” Ms Frecklington said.

“The LNP is determined to map out procedures to protect the community and still allow family members to visit terminally ill loved ones and attend funerals.

“Labor has prioritised COVID-safe plans for Hollywood celebrities and the AFL VIPs - the LNP will prioritise everyday Queenslanders.

“There can’t be one rule for the rich and another rule for Queenslanders whose families are being tragically torn apart.

“If there can be a COVID-safe plan for Tom Hanks and the AFL, there can be a plan for everyday Queenslanders.

“It’s time to end the unfair double-standards that Queenslanders keep seeing on border exemptions.”

Ms Frecklington said the COVID-safe plan for visiting the terminally ill and attending funerals could involve wearing PPE and strict requirements not to mix in the community.

“Until there is a vaccine, we need to manage and live with COVID-19,” she said.

“Lives and livelihoods can be protected, but we need consistency, compassion and common sense too.”

Ms Frecklington said Queenslanders had heard some heartbreaking stories in the last few weeks:

  • The young family of a 39-year-old Queensland man with terminal small cell cancer in his brain and spine couldn’t visit him together.
  • Sarah, a young Queenslander working in Canberra whose exemption request to see her dying father took 23 days. He tragically died before it was granted. Sarah was then denied the opportunity to go to his funeral and support her sister and mum.
  • A 72-year-old grandmother whose exemption request was refused, denying her the opportunity to bury her son.

Media Statement – Queensland border restrictions

14th September 2020

Media statement from LNP Leader Deb Frecklington on comments made today by the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s Health Minister:

‘The LNP supports strong borders and Queenslanders should ignore Labor’s election rhetoric.

‘The LNP was the first party to call for border restrictions on Victoria when that state lost control of the virus.

‘We have to have strong borders to protect Queenslanders, but we need consistency, compassion and common sense too.

‘Labor are trying to distract from the unfair double-standards that Queenslanders keep seeing on border exemptions.

‘We can’t have one rule for AFL stars and celebrities and another rule for ordinary Queenslanders whose families are being torn apart.

‘Annastacia Palaszczuk is using borders as a political weapon and is hiding behind the Chief Health Officer.

‘Annastacia Palaszczuk is the Premier, she needs to own the decisions of her government.’

Queenslanders at risk of losing out in minor party power sham

10th September 2020

More than 200,000 Queensland families are at risk of losing access to the solar bonus scheme, after a motion was supported by Katter’s Australia Party, One Nation and North Queensland First.

LNP Shadow Minister for Energy Michael Hart said families would suffer a major drop in their feed-in tariff from 44 cents to 6 cents.

“These Queensland families have spent thousands of dollars of their own money to install solar panels on their roof based on a contact with the government, but now the Katter Australian Party wants to rip up that deal,” Mr Hart said.

“The LNP is not in the business of ripping up contracts that Queensland families and pensioners rely on.

“Households would lose hundreds of dollars each year and that’s the last thing Queenslanders need right now.

“There are more than 600,000 Queenslanders that have installed solar panels on their homes with the help of government programs, this motion would put all that at risk.

“Private companies have also invested billions of dollars in renewable energy projects based on the current policy settings including the Commonwealth Government’s renewable energy target.

“Changing the goal posts as the Katter’s Australia Party, One Nation and North Queensland First have suggested would increase sovereign risk putting at risk billions of dollars of investment in Queensland and thousands of jobs.”

LNP Shadow Minister for Natural Resources Dale Last said only the LNP has a plan to reduce power prices, create new jobs and invest in Queensland.

“The motion moved by the Katter Australia Party* clearly shows how out of touch they are with every day Queenslanders and it’s disgraceful that they want to hurt the very people they were elected to represent,” Mr Last said.

“A Deb Frecklington LNP Government has a plan to introduce retail electricity competition into regional Queensland which will see households save around $300 every year.

“People in Brisbane enjoy the luxury of picking up the phone and shopping around energy retailers and the LNP is committed to making sure that can happen in the regions.

“The LNP’s energy policy also includes government investment in renewable energy where it makes economic sense to do so, private investment in coal fired power stations and Coalition’s feasibility study into a coal fire power station in Collinsville.

“The LNP will also supercharge the North West Mineral Province to create jobs for Queenslanders as part of the battery revolution.

“We have a plan for a sensible mix of energy that reduces prices and ensures energy security.”

*Mr KNUTH (Hill—KAP) (10.16 am): I give notice that I will move— 1. That this House acknowledges the vital role cheap coal-fired power plays in supporting the jobs of millions of Queenslanders now and for the next 50 years; and 2. That this House commits to providing Queenslanders with the cheapest electricity possible by ceasing costly renewable power mandates, subsidies and investment programs available to inefficient wind and solar generation to ensure coal and renewables compete on a level playing field.

No plan means more pain for Queenslanders

7th September 2020

Annastacia Palaszczuk’s failure to deliver an economic plan or State Budget has left Queensland facing years of mass unemployment and higher taxes, the LNP said today.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said the economic update released today would alarm employers and workers across Queensland.

“Labor had no economic plan before coronavirus and they have no economic plan now,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Instead of a 1000-page Budget, all Labor could deliver was a 41-page glossy brochure.

“A record 234,000 Queenslanders are out of work because Labor can’t manage the economy.

“Labor failed to rule out new taxes, failed to create new jobs and failed to outline an economic plan.

“Labor’s own projections show another 73,000 Queenslanders are set to lose their job.

“It is clear Labor isn’t working.

“Only an LNP Government will provide the economic leadership that Queensland is desperate for.”

Ms Frecklington said it was concerning that the Palaszczuk Labor Government had not ruled out more tax increases after the state election.

“Labor has slugged Queenslanders with nine new taxes in this term of government and they won’t rule out more,” Ms Frecklington said.

“No wonder Labor wanted to cancel the State Budget.

“An LNP Government will produce a full Budget in 100 days and we guarantee there will no new taxes.”

LNP Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander said Labor’s failure to deliver an economic plan would worsen the pain for Queensland workers and employers.

“Our economy is hurting like never before, but Labor has no plan to drag Queensland’s economy out of recession,” Mr Mander said

“Only the LNP has a plan to stimulate the economy, create a decade of secure jobs and drag Queensland out of this recession.

“The LNP will build new infrastructure to create jobs, build the drought-busting New Bradfield Scheme and build dams to improve food and water security.

“An LNP Government will also give Queenslanders a no-new-tax guarantee to give businesses the confidence to invest and create jobs.

“We will fully fund our promises and deliver on our fiscal principles.

“An LNP Government will get Queensland working again.”

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

  • Debt – Debt has blown out by over $18 billion in a single year to reach nearly $102 billion at the end of this financial year.
  • Taxes – Since the last election, Labor have introduced nine new or increased taxes ripping $4 billion from the state’s economy. Today they refused to rule out more taxes if re-elected.
  • Public Servants – Labor is spending an extra $7.7 billion a year on the government’s wage bill as key frontline services across education, health and police go backwards. The LNP has ruled out any forced redundancies.
  • Economic growth – Economic growth was negative last year at -0.25%, forecast economic growth has been revised down by 2.5% to be an anaemic 0.25% in this financial year.
  • Unemployment – Labor is forecasting a further 72,000 Queenslanders will lose their jobs by the end of this financial year, on top of the record 234,00 current unemployed Queenslanders.
  • Population – Queensland’s population growth rate is forecast to be just 0.75% this financial year, which is barely more than half of what it was forecast to be at the end of last year (1.75%)
  • Royalties – Labor have made a $1.4 billion royalty blunder with royalties falling to $3.1 billion – even with Labor’s new 25% gas tax.

Labor’s Broken Fiscal Principles

  1. Reduce general government debt to revenue – the debt to revenue ratio has exploded from 63% in MYFER to be 108% this financial year.
  2. Target net operating surpluses – Labor’s $8.1 billion budget deficit will be the largest deficit in over a decade and potentially the largest in Queensland’s history.
  3. Consistent capital program – Labor cut over half a billion ($513 million) from the budgeted 2019-20 capital program, cutting infrastructure projects at the expense of Queensland jobs.
  4. Maintain competitive taxation – Labor have introduced 9 new or increased taxes, ripping $4 billion from Queensland’s economy.
  5. Fully funded superannuation and WorkCover – Labor have raided over $5 billion from the public servant superannuation scheme and $3.4 billion from long service leave.
  6. Public servant growth – While population growth is forecast to increase at 1.25%, public sector growth is 2.2%.

LNP to fix Caloundra’s biggest bottleneck

4th September 2020

The LNP will bust congestion at one of the Sunshine Coast’s biggest bottlenecks and create new jobs for local workers if it wins the next state election.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington visited Caloundra today to announce a $15m funding commitment to fix the Caloundra Road – Nicklin Way roundabout.

It’s the second major LNP project to bust congestion on Caloundra Road, following Ms Frecklington’s $35m commitment to fast-track the Bells Creek Arterial Road.

The combined $50m Caloundra Road package is part of the LNP’s $1bn South-East Queensland Congestion Program of road upgrades to stimulate the economy, create new jobs and drag Queensland out of recession.

“Sunshine Coast drivers have waited long enough for this upgrade,” Ms Frecklington said.

“An LNP Government will fully fund this project and we’ll fast-track the work too.

“With 234,000 Queenslanders out of work, projects like these are needed to kickstart our economy and drag our state out of recession.”

LNP Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said the Palaszczuk Labor Government had ignored traffic problems at the notorious intersection for years.

“Caloundra Road is the Sunshine Coast’s biggest carpark,” Mr McArdle said.

“The traffic isn’t just bad at peak hour. Drivers can get stuck in jams here any time, any day.

“Only an LNP Government will fix this intersection and get Caloundra moving.”

The upgrade will include construction of new slip-lanes to improve traffic flow.

LNP Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie, whose electorate borders Caloundra Road, said the LNP will introduce a streamlined procurement process for its $1bn congestion-busting roads program that will be faster and give priority to Queensland-based contractors.

“The congestion at this roundabout isn’t just frustrating for drivers, it’s also costly for local businesses,” Mr Bleijie said.

“This project will create more Sunny Coast construction jobs and give local businesses a lift.

“Only an LNP Government will bust congestion on the Sunshine Coast and get our economy moving too.”

LNP Candidate for Caloundra Stuart Coward said the upgrade would only happen if there is a change of government on October 31st.

“Labor has consistently ignored Caloundra’s infrastructure needs,” Mr Coward said.

“Only an LNP Government will invest in the new infrastructure that this area needs to create jobs and cope with population growth.

“Unlike Labor, the LNP will invest in Caloundra and get the Sunshine Coast working again.”

Queensland economy contracts by $5.36 billion

2nd September 2020

ABS statistics reveal slump as CCIQ warns Labor has no plan for recovery

Figures released by the ABS today show Queensland’s state final demand fell by a record 5.9% in the June quarter – a huge $5.36bn plunge in economic activity.

It was Queensland’s second quarter of negative growth, meaning the state is now officially in recession.

The size of the state’s domestic economy ($84.98bn) in the June quarter was smaller than it was at the last state election ($87.63bn).

The bleak figures were released on the same day that the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland savaged the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s response to the economic crisis, stating that its so-called recovery strategy was a ‘rehash’ of earlier announcements that left the state ‘without any real plan’.

“The next election is about who has an economic plan to get Queensland out of recession and it’s clear that Labor doesn’t,” LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said.

“Business leaders have no confidence in Labor and it’s not hard to see why.

“Prior to COVID, Queensland had the nation’s highest unemployment, most bankruptcies and lowest business confidence.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk was the last Premier to announce an economic stimulus package but was the first and only Premier to cancel her Budget.

“No Budget means Labor is flying blind through the biggest economic crisis in almost a century.

“Only the LNP has a plan to stimulate the economy, create a decade of secure jobs and drag Queensland out of this recession.

“The LNP will begin the drought-busting New Bradfield Scheme, invest in new infrastructure to create more jobs and we’ll guarantee no new taxes.

“Only an LNP Government will get Queensland working again.”

Media statement from LNP Leader Deb Frecklington

2nd September 2020

Queenslanders rightfully want to know why AFL officials and celebrities from Melbourne get exemptions from hotel quarantine, but sick kids and other workers can’t.

Media reports of 400 AFL officials from Melbourne getting the red carpet treatment while medical exemptions keep getting knocked back and workers in the resources sector have to undergo mandatory hotel quarantine.

At a time when there are 2519 active cases in Victoria, it is disappointing and out of touch for the Palaszczuk government to give exemptions from mandatory hotel quarantine for so called VIP’s from Melbourne.

What makes this more galling is that Queenslanders are being denied exemptions when they travel home from NSW after lifesaving surgery.

It is time for the Premier to be upfront and honest about how many exemptions from Victoria and other hotspots will be issued in the leadup and for the AFL Grand Final.

The Premier hasn’t even spoken to Queenslanders like Jayne Brown who is recovering from life-saving surgery but bends over backwards for the rich, sports starts and other celebrities.

The Premier needs to be consistent and compassionate and this red carpet treatment is anything but.

The LNP supports the Grand Final but not the royal treatment the Palaszczuk government is dishing out.

Queenslanders won’t fall for Labor’s Bradfield scam

2nd September 2020

Queenslanders won’t fall for Labor’s pre-election New Bradfield stunt, the LNP said today.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said Annastacia Palaszczuk’s latest talkfest couldn’t hide the fact that Labor has not built a dam in drought-stricken regional Queensland for 15 years.

The LNP’s New Bradfield Scheme – devised by titans of Queensland industry Sir Leo Hielscher and Sir Frank Moore – will create Australia’s largest dam, Queensland’s largest hydro-electric project and irrigate an area of outback Queensland larger than Tasmania.

“Labor has a panel, but the LNP has a real plan to build the New Bradfield Scheme,” Ms Frecklington said.

“No one believes Labor will deliver this project. The Palaszczuk Labor Government is anti-dams, anti-regions and anti-jobs.

“Queenslanders should judge Labor on their record – not their rhetoric.”

The LNP’s New Bradfield Scheme is a nation-building project that will harness the monsoonal rains of North Queensland to create a new foodbowl in western Queensland and enough hydro-electricity to power 800,000 new homes.

“The LNP has already started engineering work from opposition,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Labor hasn’t done any of this work and now all they are offering is a talkfest to waste another year.”

Labor even voted against the New Bradfield Scheme in the last sitting week of Parliament, with the Treasurer publicly attacking the project’s concept.

“Labor won’t even build the full-sized Rookwood Weir after first promising it back in 2006,” Ms Frecklington said.

“In Wide Bay, Labor is tearing down Paradise Dam in the middle of drought, threatening the livelihoods and futures of hundreds of farming families.

“When it comes to water and dams, Labor’s credibility evaporated 15 years ago.

“Labor are only talking about this project because the election is just two months’ away.

“Only the LNP Government has a plan to build the New Bradfield Scheme and unlock this state’s potential.

“Only an LNP Government will get Queensland working again.”

Labor must release secret mine safety report

2nd September 2020

The LNP is demanding the Palaszczuk Labor Government release its report on the Grosvenor mine explosion and safety in Queensland’s resources industry.

Labor’s Mines Minister received the interim report from Queensland’s Coal Mining Board of Inquiry on Monday, August 31.

LNP Shadow Mines Minister Dale Last said he believed all Queenslanders, especially resources communities and workers, deserved to know the report’s contents.

“The LNP firmly believes that Queenslanders deserve to know what’s in the report before the October 31 election.

“While the Palaszczuk Labor Government continues to dither on mine safety in Queensland, eight lives have been lost in the past two years.

“Labor’s record on mine safety is dire and dangerous.

“The failure to monitor and regulate operations at Grosvenor mine shows there are serious institutional problems within the inspectorate.

“The LNP supports the need for a Board of Inquiry, but believes the terms of reference should be expanded to include the role of the inspectorate, with public hearings a mandatory requirement.

“Workers, industry groups and the community all deserve to have their say in an open and transparent process.

“The LNP has repeatedly called for a full bipartisan Parliamentary inquiry into safety in the resources industry as this is only way that the community, industry and workers can have their say on what is really going on.”

LNP plan to bust Gympie Road grind

1st September 2020

An LNP Government will slash travel times and increase average speeds along a 12-kilometre corridor of Gympie Road through a $20 million congestion-busting plan.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said Gympie Road consistently ranked inside the Top 10 on RACQ’s annual Red Spot Congestion Survey and took out sixth place in 2020.

The LNP’s strategy involves improving traffic signal synchronisation from Beams Road to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, removing key bottlenecks, better sequence of traffic signals, investigate upgrading key intersections at Hamilton Road and Kedron Park Road, adding turning lanes and the possible removal of some traffic lights.

The Gympie Road corridor upgrade and congestion plan will be funded through the LNP’s SEQ Congestion Program – a pipeline of new road and rail upgrades that will stimulate the economy and create 3100 constructions jobs.

The LNP’s comprehensive plan will cut travel time by 5 minutes during peak and increase average speed times for motorists by 20km/hour.

“Gympie Road is a corridor of traffic lights and brake lights,” Ms Frecklington said.

“The key thoroughfare into Brisbane from the north should be efficient and productive, but it’s been neglected by Labor for years.

“There are 35 traffic lights between Beams Rd and the Royal Brisbane and with 70,000 cars using Gympie Rd every day, it’s a recipe for congestion and crashes.

“Congestion on Gympie Rd is costing the local economy millions while traffic crawls through congested intersections.

“Gympie Rd will only get worse without smarter intersections and that’s what the LNP will deliver.

“Better coordination of signals along the corridor and upgraded intersections will streamline the Gympie Rd commute.

“Busting congestion will give local businesses a boost, helping them create even more jobs in the future.

“With more than 234,000 Queenslanders out of work, the LNP will get shovels in the ground on Gympie Rd as soon as possible.

“The LNP will invest for growth and get commuters along Gympie Rd home sooner and safer.

“Only the LNP has a plan to stimulate the economy, drag Queensland out of recession and create a decade of secure jobs.”

RACQ data shows the average speed on Gympie Rd was consistently around half the signed speed limit.

Last month the RACQ revealed that the stretch of Gympie Rd from Park Rd to Rode Rd cost the local economy almost $800,000 last year. The 1 kilometre stretch from Rode Rd to Hamilton Rd drained the economy my $700,000.

LNP MP for Clayfield Tim Nicholls said cutting travel times for drivers would make business better for local employers.

“The LNP’s plan for Gympie Rd will take the handbrake off businesses impacted by congestion delays and costs,” Mr Nicholls said.

“A holistic solution to Gympie Rd congestion is needed now and that’s what an LNP Government will deliver.

“The northside of Brisbane is booming but investment in Gympie Rd has gone bust under Labor.

“The LNP will fix Gympie Rd and unlock the potential of businesses along this key thoroughfare of Brisbane.”

LNP candidate for Aspley Amanda Cooper said the corridor upgrade and congestion plan was on top her party’s pledge to build a $90m overpass across Gympie Rd at Carseldine.

“The overpass will remove the first major intersection for motorists travelling into Brisbane from the north,” Ms Cooper said.

“Our corridor upgrade and congestion plan will also consider removing other sets of traffic lights to eliminate long bottlenecks.

“Only the LNP will get Gympie Rd moving and get local businesses growing.”
