The Queensland LNP will continue to back former Prime Minister John Howard’s sensible gun laws.
Tonight’s disallowance motion in the Queensland Parliament was nothing more than a political stunt by the Katter’s Australia Party (KAP) who are desperate to distance themselves from the Labor Government they have faithfully served for the past three years.
Importantly, the regulations passed by Queensland Parliament tonight deal only with lever-action shotguns.
Law-abiding primary producers and firearm owners will still have full access to the weapons required for day-to day management of their properties.
The new regulations don’t change the definition of ‘lawful modification’. Any claims to the contrary are false and misleading.
Those who currently hold a lever action shotgun can apply for an exemption and retain their firearms.
The temporary import ban that was put in place by the Commonwealth Government in 2015, remains in place until all states re-classify these firearms as agreed to by COAG.
Ironically, if the KAP disallowance motion was successful, the temporary import ban would have remained in place meaning that these weapons could not be imported.
The LNP will be monitoring the application of these new laws to ensure that law-abiding firearm owners aren’t buried in red tape and unnecessary delays by the Weapons Licensing Branch, as has been the case for three years under the Palaszczuk Labor Government.
While Labor continues to treat law-abiding firearm owners like criminals, the LNP will continue to make sure their licenses are protected and community safety is paramount.
