Labor’s new levy will hurt households

8th March 2018

The Palaszczuk Government is preparing to hit Queenslanders with yet another stealth tax, Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington warned today.

"In Parliament today Labor again couldn’t give a straight answer when the LNP asked if a new waste levy was coming," Ms Frecklington said.

"A new waste levy will hit every Queenslander’s hip-pocket just to stop a problem that affects a handful of dumps in the South-East.

"It doesn’t matter what the problem is – Labor’s solution is always tax, tax and more tax.

"We can’t allow Labor to introduce a ‘wheelie bin’ tax where every family pays more for their household rubbish.

"Labor is already introducing four new taxes this year – when will their tax grab end?"

Shadow Minister for the Environment David Crisafulli said small and medium-sized Queensland businesses were already battling more taxes and high power bills.

"The waste levy will smash businesses in construction, manufacturing, tourism and hospitality and the cost will be passed on to the public," Mr Crisafulli said.

"Most businesses do the right thing and try to recycle as much as possible, so why should they be hit with yet another Labor tax?"
