Labor’s waste tax to hit home buyers and businesses

20th March 2018

Annastacia Palaszczuk’s dishonesty campaign with Queensland has continued with the introduction of a new waste tax.

Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington said Labor’s plan to introduce a waste tax would hurt businesses and everyday Queenslanders.

"Everyone will pay for Labor’s wheelie bin tax. Every householder could be slugged more for garbage collection," Ms Frecklington said.

"Builders will be slugged more to get rid of waste and that cost will be passed on to new homeowners, costing Queenslanders an extra $2000 to build a new home.

"This levy will be a tax on every Queenslander and will impact every industry, from construction to manufacturing, tourism and hospitality.

"The extra costs from the waste tax will inevitably be met by consumers.

"This job-destroying waste tax is in addition to the four taxes Labor announced just two days before the last election."

LNP Shadow Environment Minister David Crisafulli said when things get tough, Labor’s only answer is new taxes

"This has nothing to do with changing behaviour, but everything to do with reaching into people’s pockets and charging them more," Mr Crisafulli said.

"How does slugging somebody in regional Queensland deal with a problem of waste dumping at a handful of dumps in the Southeast?

"This isn’t a waste solution, it’s another tax grab."
