Labor’s secret Cross River Rail taxes still on the table

30th June 2016
  • Palaszczuk and Trad refuse to rule out remaining proposed taxes for Cross River Rail
  • Nearly $5 billion of property and transport taxes still on the table
  • Palaszczuk must show leadership and come clean with Queenslanders over how they will pay for the project

Annastacia Palaszczuk must show leadership and rule out the secret taxes proposed in Labor’s secret business case for her own Cross River Rail project.

Acting Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington said nearly $5 billion in taxes on property owners and public transport users proposed in Labor’s secret business case were still on the table following the Palaszczuk Government’s refusal to rule them out.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk has been silent on her government’s plan to slug Queenslanders to pay for a project she initiated when she was Transport Minister,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Jackie Trad would not rule out a land tax or higher rates on nearby property owners, nor would she rule out a public transport infrastructure tax or ticket surcharge.

“Will Annastacia Palaszczuk rule these taxes, fees and charges out or will she admit to her plan to make nearby property owners and public transport users pay nearly $5 billion to plug the Cross River Rail black hole?

“Now the real $10 billion cost of the project has been revealed, despite Labor’s attempt to cover it up, Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to come clean and reveal the bill Queensland taxpayers will have to foot to pay for her project.”

The Palaszczuk Labor Government has still refused to rule out four of its six secret taxes on Cross River Rail:

  • Land tax on nearby property owners = $1 billion
  • Public transport infrastructure tax paid for by property owners = $2.6 billion
  • Ticket surcharge paid for public transport users = $1.08 billion
  • Higher rates on nearby property owners = $285 million
  • Total = $4.915 billion
