Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington has welcomed a $2.3 million investment from the Crisafulli Government to support local councils in reducing landfill and boosting recycling across the Nanango electorate.

The funding, delivered through the Resource Recovery Boost Fund, will support both the Somerset Regional Council and Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council to expand recycling infrastructure and drive innovative waste solutions.

In the Somerset region, the funding will help divert approximately 59 tonnes of waste from landfill with the construction of site upgrades and improvements and providing the community with dedicated resource recovery drop off areas at the Coominya Resource Recovery Centre.

Ms Frecklington said the investment delivers practical outcomes for local communities.

“This is about getting waste out of the ground and backing practical solutions that turn it into value,” Ms Frecklington said.

“This investment means less going into landfill, more being reused and recycled, and real savings for local councils.

“We’re supporting councils with the infrastructure they need to manage waste smarter and keep their communities clean and sustainable.”

The first round of the Resource Recovery Boost Fund is supporting 26 council projects and expected to divert more than 150,000 tonnes of waste from landfill statewide, while saving councils approximately $17 million annually in waste levy costs.
