Esk kids prove to be savvy shoppers

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington has congratulated students from Esk State School for their prize-winning efforts in the 2025 Buy Smart Competition, during a special ceremony held at Queensland Parliament.

The annual competition, run by the Office of Fair Trading, encourages young Queenslanders to build their financial capability and become more aware of scams and consumer rights.

Esk State School took out third place in the Years 4–6 category, earning recognition for their creative and thoughtful project promoting smart consumer choices.

Mrs Frecklington said she was proud to congratulate the students — both as the Member for Nanango and in her role as Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity.

“Young people are growing up in a fast-moving world, and how we use money has changed significantly over generations,” Deb said.

“I’ve been amazed by the knowledge and creativity our Buy Smart contestants have demonstrated — from podcasts and short films to storybooks and games.

“It shows how young people can learn to make smart choices as consumers, whether it’s budgeting, spotting a scam, or reading the fine print — and they’re doing it in such engaging ways.

“It’s wonderful to see our local students being recognised at a state level for their hard work and innovation. Their achievements show how valuable programs like Buy Smart are in preparing young Queenslanders to navigate the world of money with confidence,” said Deb

With more than $15,000 in prize money on offer, the Buy Smart program inspires school students across Queensland to become informed, confident and responsible consumers.
