Funding cuts to Neighborhood Watch threaten the crime fighting group’s mission to keep Queensland communities safe.
Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington said Labor’s $200,000 program spruiked today was too little, too late, following a crushing 85 per cent funding cut announced in March.
"No matter how Police Minister Mark Ryan tries to spin this, the Palaszczuk Government has slashed Neighbourhood Watch funding from $500,000 a year to just $75,000," Ms Frecklington said.
"Minister Ryan is now pitching a new arrangement for Neighbourhood Watch, but the volunteer group is still well short of the funds they had and need.
"The Palaszczuk Government stabbed community-spirited volunteers in the back, and have now turned around an offered them a handshake.
"These funding cuts undermine the important work the Neighbourhood Watch volunteers do in our communities."
Ms Frecklington said Neighbourhood Watch played a major role in crime prevention and detection.
"Neighbourhood Watch volunteers are the eyes and ears in the community and provide a vital link to police," she said.
"The volunteers give valuable information to police and keep their communities aware and informed.
"More should being done to boost community involvement in crime prevention but Labor is cutting vital funding instead.
"The LNP will continue to fight for more resources for police and community crime prevention."
