LNP Leader Deb Frecklington today called on the Palaszczuk Government to back the Opposition’s gun-crime legislation following the armed carjacking of a man and his three children on Monday night in Ascot, Brisbane.
“This brazen gun-point carjacking reinforces the need to introduce the LNP’s tough new laws to bust gun crime in Queensland,” Ms Frecklington.
“Queensland is witnessing a crimewave under the Palaszczuk Labor Government and it needs tougher, urgent measures to end gun violence.
“The LNP’s proposed crackdown on gun violence is before Parliament right now.
“Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to support the LNP’s laws.
“Queenslanders should not live in fear amid a surge in organised criminal gangs, bikie shootouts in broad daylight and carjackings at gunpoint.”
LNP Shadow Minister for Police and Corrective Services Trevor Watts said police needed tougher laws to protect the community.
“This carjacking was terrifying news for all Queenslanders and is a symptom of the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s soft on crime approach,” Mr Watts said.
“The LNP will introduce tough new gun laws which will capture a range of offences and put community safety first.
“The maximum penalty for carrying a gun in a public place is two years, but the LNP would increase this to 10 years.
“Our hard-working police need tougher powers to crackdown on these criminals.”
