Miles’ Youth Crime chaos and crisis

27th March 2024

Steven Miles is just not up to it.

While Queenslanders have been suffering at the hands of youth criminals, Steven Miles has laughed at youth crime.

While Queenslanders have had their cars stolen, impacting their livelihoods, Steven Miles has refused to remove Detention as a Last Resort.

While Queenslanders have had their homes invaded, been held at knifepoint and their children threatened, Steven Miles has told Queenslanders he would not be changing youth crime laws.

This week, Steven Miles has flip-flopped on removing Detention as a Last Resort, before ruling it out this morning.

Now, it’s clear Steven Miles’ stance was all about playing politics and never about what was best for Queenslanders.

That’s why Queenslanders can’t trust Steven Miles.

Labor is in chaos and crisis and Queenslanders are paying the price.

When glimpsing his own political mortality, Steven Miles will jump to save himself.

When Queenslanders lives were at risk, he laughed.

Steven Miles has never taken youth crime seriously.

Victim numbers have gone up 213% under this Government.

Police numbers are going down, with 1521 fewer police today than Labor promised at the last election.

This is why Queenslanders can’t trust anything Steven Miles says, he stands for nothing.

Only the LNP has the Right Priorities for Queensland’s Future, including making our community safer.

The LNP will remove Detention as a Last Resort in the Making Queensland Safer Laws and put victims’ rights front and centre.

LNP announces plan to strengthen crime victims’ rights

26th March 2024

Crime victims’ rights bolstered in “Making Queensland Safer Laws” to be rolled-out by the end of the year

The LNP has today announced three major changes to strengthen the rights of victims of crimes under the LNP’s signature Making Queensland Safer Laws.

Unveiling the changes in Townsville today, LNP Leader David Crisafulli said strengthening victims’ rights in youth crime laws was a priority for the LNP.

If the LNP wins the October election an LNP Government would take strong action to strengthen the rights of victims of crime and:

  • Re-write the Sentencing Principles and the Charter of Youth Justice Principles in the Youth Justice Act to make victims’ rights paramount. The impact of crime on victims is currently the 10th consideration during sentencing and completely absent from the Charter of Youth Justice Principles. The LNP will re-write the sentencing principles and the Charter principles to ensure the full impact of youth crime on victims can be considered by the court and move victims’ rights up in the Youth Justice Act.
  • Lift the veil of secrecy by providing victims updates relating to their cases, with automatic updates. Crime victims must currently apply to receive updates regarding the justice process for youth offenders in what can be an overwhelming process. The LNP will remove the burden from victims and make it as easy as possible to receive updates, which is why we will shift the onus from “opt in” to “opt out”.

  • Amend the Children’s Court Act to remove the provision excluding victims and their families from Children’s Court on the basis of prejudice to offenders. Victims and their families are often blocked from court proceedings involving offenders, the LNP will remove that provision to allow victims and their families to always attend court.

The law changes are another part of the LNP’s Making Queensland Safer Laws which the LNP will roll-out if elected in October.

Under Labor, the number of victims of crime have grown by 213% as crime skyrockets across the State to record numbers.

LNP Leader David Crisafulli said Queensland victims of crime deserved to be a priority, not an afterthought.

“Today I commit to putting victims’ rights first in the Making Queensland Safer Laws, if the LNP is elected,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“Shockingly, victims of crime have been left to pick up the pieces under the Queensland Youth Crime Crisis, because of Labor’s weak laws and fewer police.

“Victims should not be left wondering if their offenders have faced consequences for their actions and their rights shouldn’t be left to be the last consideration.

“By re-writing youth justice laws, we can put victims’ rights first and lift the veil of secrecy around the outcome of their cases.”

The LNP’s Making Queensland Safer Laws are the strong crime laws Queenslanders have been demanding and will be a suite of laws designed to tackle the Youth Crime Crisis.

Amending the Youth Justice Act to remove Detention as a Last Resort will be the first change under the laws, and will be delivered before the end of the year if the LNP is elected in October.

Shadow Minister for Youth Justice Laura Gerber said Queenslanders deserved better than crime victims’ rights being at least the tenth consideration when youth criminals are sentenced.

“Labor has already said they won’t amend the Youth Justice Act and has blocked the LNP’s attempts to create stronger crime laws,” Ms Gerber said.

“The LNP will put victims’ rights at the heart of the Youth Justice Act, ensure the impact on victims is a principle consideration in sentencing.

“The Queensland Youth Crime Crisis continues to get worse under Labor’s chaos and crisis, nothing will change until the government changes.

“Queenslanders don’t trust Steven Miles and Labor aren't taking crime seriously because they have ignored the rights of victims.

“Steven Miles has already admitted he doesn’t believe he can change the Youth Crime Crisis his government created, because he’s just not up it.

“The LNP will deliver the best youth crime laws in the country and tackle the Youth Crime Crisis that Labor created with weak laws and fewer police.

“Only the LNP has the right priorities for Queensland’s Future, including making our community safer.”

LNP launches Making Queensland Safer Laws

25th March 2024

WATCH THE AD HERE

The LNP has boldly announced the next steps it will take to tackle Queensland’s out-of-control Queensland Youth Crime Crisis.

LNP Leader David Crisafulli will today announce the Making Queensland Safer Laws would be rolled-out as the first legislative priority of an LNP Government, if elected in October.

An amendment to the Youth Justice Act to remove Detention as a Last Resort would be the first of several changes, forming the foundation of the Making Queensland Safer Laws which would be rolled-out before year-end.

The LNP has also launched a major television and digital campaign outlining the LNP’s plans to make our community safer.

The ad follows David Crisafulli to his family farm in North Queensland and across the State, meeting with Queenslanders and vowing to fix Labor’s crime mess to keep Queenslanders safe.

LNP Leader David Crisafulli said the Making Queensland Safer Laws were the strong crime laws Queenslanders had been demanding, and deserved.

“My commitment to Queenslanders is to roll-out our Making Queensland Safer Laws before the end of the year, to arrest the Youth Crime Crisis,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“Removing Detention as a Last Resort will be the first action of an LNP Government.

“For more than three years the LNP has been travelling the State, listening to Queenslanders about their priorities.

“The Making Queensland Safer Laws are a priority for Queenslanders.

“Queenslanders want to feel safe in their homes and their businesses, they want an end to the cycle of crime that is terrorising their community.

“The reason we’re in this mess is fewer police and weak laws, because Labor doesn’t take crime seriously.

“After nearly a decade, it’s clear Labor has the wrong priorities and they’re out of ideas to fix the Youth Crime Crisis they created.

“The rights of crime victims must be put front and centre, and we must have consequences for actions by re-writing the Youth Justice Act.

“Only the LNP has the right priorities for Queensland’s future, including making our community safer.”

COST OF LIVING CRISIS: Queenslanders to cop $53 power bill increase under Labor

19th March 2024

Labor’s failures at Callide drives-up Queensland power bills AGAIN while other States have power bill reprieve

The Australian Energy Regulator has revealed Queenslanders are set to be slugged with another increase to power bills under Labor.

Power bills are going down in other States while Queenslanders are copping another $53 increase, after a whopping 19.9% increase last year.

Queenslanders’ power bills skyrocketed three times the national average last year, the worst in the nation, and now they’ll pay even more under Labor.

Labor’s failures at Callide are directly responsible for skyrocketing power bills.

In a Cost of Living Crisis, Labor is costing Queenslanders.

For 1,000 days our major power plant has been offline.

Shockingly, Labor has missed seven deadlines to get it back online and still hasn’t come clean on what went wrong in the first place.

Now, Queenslanders will be slugged an extra $53 on their power bills.

Both the Queensland Competition Authority and the Auditor-General have confirmed Labor’s Callide failures are driving-up power bills.

Labor’s secret report into Callide still hasn’t been released and they’re keeping the truth under wraps.

This a government with the wrong priorities, in a constant state of chaos and crisis.

The truth is, Queenslanders can’t trust Labor in a Cost of Living Crisis.

Only the LNP has the right priorities for Queensland’s future, including saving you paying for Labor’s failures.

72 lost lives - Child Safety’s shock death record

15th March 2024

72 children under government care died last year

The Palaszczuk-Miles Government has finally released the long-overdue Annual Report into the deaths of young people in Queensland and its clear why they hid it for so long.

Alarmingly, 72 children died under Child Safety’s care last year.

That is 72 young people who will never have the chance to grow up.

That is 72 young people whose lives have been extinguished in a system that failed them.

That is a one-third increase in lost lives in two years.

Queensland children have paid the ultimate price for Labor’s chaos and crisis.

The Child Safety system has been broken by a government with the wrong priorities, which has failed to resource and run the system that should protect our must vulnerable children.

Shockingly, the mortality rate for children known to Child Safety is almost double the Queensland child mortality rate.

Labor knows they’ve failed, which is why they’ve deliberately kept this report under wraps since October.

This Labor Government has shockingly prioritised their own political interest over the safety of our State’s most vulnerable children.

Political coups should not take precedence over the safety of children.

Now Queenslanders know the truth, they also need to know what is being done to ensure this shocking record isn’t repeated.

Only the LNP has the Right Priorities for Queensland’s Future, which includes reforming our Child Safety and Residential Care systems.

LNP Supercharges Solar for Renters

13th March 2024

Practical Cost of Living Plan
$3,500 grants to reduce renters’ power bills

The LNP has today announced a major cost of living relief program for Queensland renters, with a plan to subsidise solar panels on rental properties across Queensland.

The Supercharged Solar for Renters plan will provide grants of up to $3,500 toward the installation of solar panels on rental homes.

The plan, announced by LNP Leader David Crisafulli today, is expected to save the average rental household over $700 per year on power bills and help ease the increasing pressures renters are facing in the Queensland Housing Crisis and Cost of Living Crisis.

Under the LNP’s Supercharged Solar for Renters plan the immediate benefit of cheaper power bills will flow directly to renters who pay for their own electricity while the grants are designed to incentivise eligible homeowners who would benefit from the long-term investment of solar technology on their investment property.

The new Supercharged Solar for Renters plan is part of the LNP’s comprehensive commitment to driving-down cost of living pressures on Queenslanders and follows another policy announced by David Crisafulli last week of grants up to $5,000 to support women returning to work.

LNP Leader David Crisafulli said the Supercharged Solar for Renters plan would provide immediate relief for renters while delivering long-term benefits to the environment, should the LNP win the October election.

“The Supercharged Solar for Renters program is a win-win, it’s good for the environment and good for the hip pocket of renters,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“Our plan will deliver practical, long-term cost of living relief to Queensland renters, while charging-up our solar power capabilities.

“At a time when Queenslanders are struggling to keep a roof over their head and pay the bills, this delivers real relief for one of the big kitchen table bills.”

After a trial of a similar program in 2019-20, the scheme was cut by the Labor Government, despite the plan having broad support from industry and renters.

In order to provide sustainable cost of living and housing relief, only homes with an existing tenancy agreement would be eligible for the grants.

Shadow Minister for Energy and Cost of Living Deb Frecklington said Queenslanders had struggled for too long under the Palaszczuk-Miles Government whose chaos and crisis was driving-up the cost of living.

“The longer Labor are in power the worse Queensland’s Cost of Living Crisis gets and only the LNP has the right priorities for Queensland’s future,” Ms Frecklington said.

“The LNP’s priority is driving-down the cost pressures facing Queensland families, including power bills, which skyrocketed almost 20% just last year under Labor. That’s the biggest jump in the country,” Ms Frecklington.

“Not only will we drive-down power bills by getting our major power plant back online, but our Supercharged Solar for Renters plan will also eliminate hundreds of dollars in electricity costs for Queensland renters each year.

“It’s practical, it’s long-term, it’s the vision and plan Queenslanders deserve.

“Driving-down the Cost of Living is a priority for the LNP, because it’s a priority for Queenslanders.”

LNP announces $20 million Returning to Work package to unlock women’s economic security

8th March 2024

The LNP has today announced a $20 million financial assistance package to support women returning to the workforce and unlock women’s economic security.

LNP Leader David Crisafulli announced the economic empowerment Returning to Work package in support of International Women’s Day “Count Her In” focus for women’s economic inclusion.

The LNP’s Returning to Work package offers practical financial assistance to support women who want to transition back into the workforce after having children, caring for family or illness.

The $20 million policy would be spent across four years offering grants up to $5,000 to help cover essential costs including:

  • Workwear
  • Childcare
  • Re-certification and training
  • Preparation of CVs or job-seeking coaching
  • Technology
  • Relocation

The policy is part of the LNP’s Women’s Economic Security plan and will tackle the economic barriers currently preventing women from re-joining the workforce.

The initial $20 million commitment would be rolled out across Queensland should the LNP win the October 2024 election.

“The LNP is committed to economic empowerment for women and our plan will unlock opportunities for women seeking to return to the workforce,” Mr Crisafulli said.

The LNP’s Returning to Work package is key to removing barriers to re-employment through financial assistance for costs like childcare, technical re-certification or relocation.

“The costs of purchasing a computer to prepare a CV, clothes for interviews or covering childcare costs until they get re-established at work, are very real barriers to re-employment.

“Women should not be locked-out of a job because they can’t afford the cost of job-seeking.

“Alarmingly, in a crippling Cost of Living Crisis, the costs involved with employment has placed it out of reach for too many women.”

Shadow Minister for Women’s Economic Security Amanda Camm said the announcement was part of the LNP’s commitment to women’s economic security.

“The LNP wants to break-down financial barriers and help women take the next step to economic empowerment,” Ms Camm said.

“If a woman has left her employment for longer than six months to focus on children or being a full-time carer, then we should do everything we can to support her when she chooses the time is right to find a new job.

“We will ‘Count Her In’ and restore the financial freedom and choice which has been stripped away by rising cost pressures on families.

“Only the LNP has the Right Priorities for Queensland’s Future, including improving women’s economic security.”

BLOCKED: Labor votes against cost of living action for Queensland families

7th March 2024

Statement by Deb Frecklington - Shadow Minister for Cost of Living

Labor has confirmed they're all talk and no action when it comes to addressing Queensland's Cost of Living Crisis, after they blocked the LNP’s bid to expand the Cost of Living Inquiry for Queenslanders.

The Palaszczuk-Miles Government voted against examining why Queenslanders are experiencing some of the highest price rises in the nation and how these cost pressures could be addressed by government.

The expanded Inquiry would have put the microscope on the rising costs the State Government controls while also holding the big supermarkets to account.

Labor’s decision means the Inquiry will be:

  • BLOCKED from examining the impact of rising electricity prices, after Queensland experienced a 20% increase in power bills, the worst in the nation and triple the national average, with the Callide power plant being offline for nearly three years.
  • BLOCKED from reviewing the impact of skyrocketing insurance prices, after Queensland experienced 18% increases in insurance due to the youth crime crisis and Labor’s failure to deliver flood resilience.
  • BLOCKED from considering the impact of rising water costs, as well as a lack of water security, with the Government failing to build new dams and now tearing down the Paradise Dam, with no water security plan to bring down the cost of water for growers.
  • BLOCKED from investigating the impact of increased transport costs, after Queensland experienced the biggest increases in transport costs in the nation, as a result of the Government’s failure to maintain and invest in our road and rail network.

Shadow Minister for Energy and Cost of Living Deb Frecklington said Labor’s decision was an insult to families who were struggling to make ends meet.

“Today Steven Miles proved he’s all show and no go when it comes to fighting rising prices for Queenslanders,” Ms Frecklington said.

"There's no question the big supermarkets should be held to account but so too should the Government that is influencing costs like electricity, transport, insurance and water.

“Families are buckling under the rising costs his Government controls and he’s blocked our ability to examine them.

“As we travel the State, skyrocketing cost of living is the number one issue raised by Queenslanders.

“Queenslanders know Labor’s chaos and crisis has driven-up costs in electricity, water, insurance and transport.

“Steven Miles must front-up and explain to Queenslanders why he blocked our expanded Inquiry that would have put downward pressure on prices.

“An LNP Government will expand the Cost of Living Inquiry because our priority is saving you paying for Labor’s failures.”

Statement from the Shadow Minister for Women, Ros Bates

7th March 2024

Steven Miles has chosen not to invite LNP women MPs to the official Women’s Week event in Parliament tonight.

In a week designed to celebrate all women, an invitation would cost nothing but meant everything for what that could have represented.

Instead, Steven Miles made Women’s Week all about politics.

Unbelievably, male Labor MPs, including one who has had to apologise for calling a female MP a “dopey stupid woman”, have been invited to the Premier’s celebration of women.

Labor have spat hollow platitudes from one side of the Parliament this week, while in the next breath spitefully attacked LNP women who come to work here to stand up for women in Queensland.

How dare he exclude women from the event based on their political colours.

It’s disrespectful and sends a terrible to message Queensland women.

Steven Miles says lighting up Parliament purple tonight is “called walking the walk”, but it turns he’s more interested in talking the talk.

RTI REVELATIONS: Miles caught-out misleading again

6th March 2024

Miles’ Canberra Cuts Charade exposed as Queensland Ministers “negotiated” infrastructure cuts weeks prior to trip

Premier Steven Miles has been caught-out again blatantly misleading Queenslanders, in the same week he was forced to apologise for misleading the Parliament.

Astonishing internal communications between the Commonwealth Government and the Palaszczuk-Miles Government released to the LNP Opposition under Right to Information, has revealed Miles’ Canberra charade.

In November, Federal Minister Catherine King announced 14 projects had been cut entirely or been put on the go-slow.

RTI documents now reveal Palaszczuk-Miles Government Ministers “negotiated” “changes to the projects lists”, despite later claiming their government “has not and will not cooperate”.

Despite secretly “negotiating” Labor’s cuts list Steven Miles led a farce “Team Queensland” delegation to Canberra weeks later, announcing his aim was “convincing the Commonwealth not to accept the proposals in this review”, which amounted to nothing.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Jarrod Bleijie said Labor’s “Team Queensland” Canberra trip had been exposed as nothing more than a dirty political trick.

“Labor’s cuts charade is another dirty political trick by a Premier Queenslanders can’t trust,” Mr Bleijie said.

“Labor was telling Queenslanders one thing and doing another thing behind closed doors.

“Steven Miles architected an infrastructure razor gang and has treated Queenslanders as mugs, expecting them to believe their lies.

“The truth is, the ink was dry on Labor’s cuts list long before the Canberra charade because they ‘negotiated’ the list with their Labor mates.

“The fact they carried on with their Canberra charade that cost Queenslanders thousands of dollars and delivered nothing but cuts, is just another example of Steven Miles’ deepening integrity crisis.

“This Premier’s integrity is on trial, after admitting he lied Steven Miles has now been exposed taking Queenslanders for a ride, caring more about delivering his political future than delivering the infrastructure for the future of Queenslanders.

“The Palaszczuk-Miles Government’s wrong priorities and constant state of chaos and crisis is costing Queenslanders.”

RTI bombshell: Labor’s chaos puts Hospital upgrades “at risk”

4th March 2024

Half of all hospital upgrades facing major delays or cost blow-outs
Labor attempts to hide failures through RTI process

Alarming internal Queensland Health documents have exposed Queensland’s hospital upgrade program is on alert, with revelations a staggering 30 of 61 hospital upgrade projects have been delayed or are facing major cost blowouts.

The documents, released to the LNP Opposition under Right to Information, expose half of all hospital upgrades are now at risk and have been escalated to code “amber” under Labor’s schedule.

Shockingly, the RTI also reveals Labor has attempted to block information being released about delays and blowouts for election commitments, in a major affront to the public information process.

The news comes as the Queensland Health Crisis continues to worsen under Labor, with the State heaving under the nation’s worst ambulance ramping at 43%, and blowouts to surgery and specialist waitlists.

Critical projects left at risk under Labor include: Caboolture Hospital Stage 1 – 2 year delay; BRRHP & Staff Accommodation Phase 2 – 3 year delay; Nambour General Hospital Redevelopment – 1 year delay; Cairns Mental Health Unit – 2 year delay; Redland Hospital Expansion Stage 1 – 2.5 year delay; BRRHP & Staff Accommodation Phase 1 – 1 year delay; Logan Hospital Expansion Stage 1 – 2 year delay.

Shadow Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Ros Bates said only the LNP had the Right Priorities for Queensland's Future and could deliver these projects on-time and on-budget.

“Only the LNP has the right priorities for Queensland to deliver these projects on-time and on-budget,” Ms Bates said.

“Minister Fentiman has overseen an unfathomable failure, with half of all hospital upgrades now delayed or blown-out.

“It’s clear Labor can’t deliver what they promised, and what’s even worse is they’d prefer to cover-up their failures instead coming clean on what it means for Queenslanders suffering due to Labor’s health crisis.

“Serious questions must be answered about why, in the middle of the Queensland Health Crisis, hospital upgrades have hit a red-light when they should be of paramount priority.

“What’s worse, blatant cover-ups and hijacking Queenslanders’ right to information, simply to hide their embarrassing failures, confirms Labor can’t be trusted to tell the truth.

“They can’t be trusted to deliver on-time and on-budget and now they’ve been caught-out in a cover-up.

“This a government with the wrong priorities, in a constant state of chaos and crisis, that would rather hide the truth than heal the Queensland Health Crisis.

“Only the LNP has the Right Priorities for Queensland’s Future, including easier access to health services.”
